Transformer testing and selection of valves / tubes to use them with

This test jig is ideal. I don't have a variac so I use my signal generator. It will deliver 10 volts. If that is not enough I reverse the transformer.
If R2 is adjustable it can be set to produce the same voltage as the primary and the inductance determined.
If you have some old transformers the color code may help.

This table may come in handy too.
